On May 15th, 2018 representatives of Rainforest Alliance, Fyffes, IPL, and the Global Living Wage Coalition met with the Banana Growers Association in Independence, Belize to launch a new living wage project for the country. The IDH sponsored project, Next Steps in Sustainability – Measuring Impact and Testing Living Wage, led by Rainforest Alliance includes the estimation of a living wage by the GLWC in rural Belize. We are extremely appreciative of the support of all of our partners in this project and of the BGA and local producers. Field work for this study began June 2nd and we expect to publish a report by early fall. The overall project reaches beyond the living wage estimate itself to assess the wage gap at selected banana farms in the region as a first step to understand how the entire supply chain can be engaged to support worker rights and the long term sustainability of the industry. We commend the forward thinking of all involved to ensure that we advance multi-stakeholder efforts to achieve a living wage.
